List of Online Directories to Submit your Website to
Submitting your website to directories is recommended as it adds backlinks to your website, increases its PageRank (albeit a little) and the page is generally 'on topic' as it is a list of other similar sites, which improves the quality of the backlink. It's tedious and time-consuming but worth doing.
Its is not necessary to submit your site to the major search engines as they will find your site through links from other websites.
Before you start submitting to directories you must pre-prepare the following:
- Title of your site
- Correct URL (website address)
- Approx. 25 word description
- Keywords
- Categories
- Locations/Areas served (if Regional service)
For example:
Title: Barry Johnson Motorbike Repairs
URL: http://www.barryjohnsonbikes.com/
Description: Motorbike repairs and new and used parts supplied and fitted on site for all types of bikes - custom build work undertaken.
Keywords: motorbike, motorbike repairs, motorbike parts, motorbike repairs southampton, parts, southampton, south england
Categories: Autos, Motorcycles (Regional: England : Southampton)
Most require you enter these details for a listing, some will be strict about correct titles and descriptions although some may be more lax (allowing you to add more keyword rich text to the link and description).
The main online directories
DMOZ - Open Directory Project: free to add your website but very slow for the editors to review and approve. Some questions remain over the integrity and impartiality of the editors but as Google and many others pull data from this resource it is important. If your listing does not appear after 6 months submit it again - but make sure you wait 6 months between re-submitting (otgherwise it goes to bottom of pile again).
Yahoo Directory - the original large directory system. USD$300 to submit your website plus USD$300 every year to keep it included in the directory. They also offer a free search inclusion but should find your site anyway from other links. 4W's opinion - unless you have money to burn we do not recommend this due to cost!
Yell.com - online yellow pages. The links from this directory are not direct, they are re-direct URLs so there is no backlink benefit. If you have the type of business that benefits from a listing in the printed Yellow Pages then this may be worth the listing.
Lycos Directory - another long-established directory with paid for inclusion.
